Kurt-

Student version ( http://www.mathworks.com/academia/student_version/ ) currently includes the following:

    *  MATLAB
    * Simulink
    * Symbolic Math Toolbox
    * Control System Toolbox
    * Signal Processing Toolbox
    * Signal Processing Blockset
    * Statistics Toolbox
    * Optimization Toolbox
    * Image Processing Toolbox

It is possible to add on many of the other toolboxes, should you need/want them.

The Cray CX1 I have runs HPC Server 2008 and is rock solid. We really love the parallel/distributed computing capabilities and run some really interesting and large problems entirely in the Matlab environment without any MPI programming. Probably the best software addition Mathworks has made in years.

We're really trying to figure out if we need to revert back to Windows Vista, which although has many problems, everything Matlab related works fine.

Appreciate it... yes she's in grad school at the University of Utah eligible for the student version and I've read that 2009a/b should work with Windows 7. The only problem with the student version is that there are never any of the toolboxes required. Is it possible to get student licenses for toolboxes?

Appreciate the help.

@Kurt,

I wasn't able to follow the exact issue you're having. MATLAB R14SP3 predates Windows 7 by a few years and so we can't guarantee that it will work on your machine. You may want to try running it in XP (32-bit) compatibility mode. Alternatively you can try downloading a newer version of Java 1.5 or 1.6 than the one that comes with MATLAB and follow this solution to change MATLAB to use the new version.
Your wife should also investigate if she is eligible for a student version or if her adviser has a MATLAB license for a recent version that she can use at home.

@Sung,

If your personal settings are set by a startup.m you can specify in the Windows shortcut which folder the MATLAB executable is started in .

In windows 7, I have a Matlab icon in my taskbar. But if I click it, then a new icon appears in the taskbar. I know that the launching icon and the actual matlab session are linked to different executable files. The problem is that if I run the direct link to the executable, then I lose all personal settings when I run it (like initialization in the path is not run).

Having separate matlab taskbar icon when I run a session is not very elegant. Is there a way to share the same icon that I use to launch a session?
