I remembered that the &lt;tt&gt;applylut&lt;/tt&gt; optimization was not the only factor involved in speeding up the &lt;tt&gt;&#039;thin&#039;&lt;/tt&gt; option of &lt;tt&gt;bwmorph&lt;/tt&gt;.  I&#039;ll add a clarifying note in the post.</description>

		<description>I remember when R2007b arrived... I was new to MATLAB and in the middle of a project that would have involved a thinning stage, except that thinning with bwmorph was too slow (taking several seconds).  I was quite pleased to finally come up with a convoluted workaround that did what I needed using bwulterode, until R2007b came along and made the workaround redundant.
I was very curious at the time as to how such drastic improvements in bwmorph could have been achieved.  It&#039;s nice to finally know, and I&#039;m glad you had that light bulb moment.</description>
