Proudly launching MATLAB Answers

I am very happy to announce the launch of a new MathWorks service on MATLAB Central: MATLAB Answers. What does it do? MATLAB Answers is designed to provide
  • Quick, correct answers to well formed questions about MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Recognition to those that answer those questions through a reputation system.
  • A largely self-moderating environment that MATLAB users want to visit (unthreaded answers and voting makes the best answers float to the top)
  • A valuable resource that anyone can find easily even if they were not looking for it on MATLAB Central.
This is the first release; there are more features to come. But we have the basic functionality in place and we want to hear your opinion about it. Please go and ask questions. Go and answer questions. Do both. And send us your feedback on what you like and what should change. We have already seeded the community with many popular questions and their answers. So, without further ado: MATLAB Answers!

    Wow, our very own Matlab Overflow! Doug I hope they pay you per answer because it looks like you’re gonna be answering a lot more.

  2. dhull replied on :

    @Oscar

    Thanks for the encouragement.

    With any luck, we will all be answering less! It will be a lot easier to point people to existing questions and answers.
    I would rather answer one question once and make it easy for people to find that answer.

    See you on MATLAB Answers!

    Doug

  3. Petter replied on :

    This is great, but Stack Overflow is already quite good.

  4. Petter replied on :

    There is no possibility of downvoting answers, which can be quite useful on SO.

  5. dhull replied on :

    This is the initial release for MATLAB Answers. We expect to implement features and draw an audience more specific to the MATLAB audience.

  6. EBS replied on :

    It would be great if we could easily submit suggestions to merge duplicate questions to the admins using some UI mechanism/form – otherwise there is going to be a lot of clutter and duplication.

  7. dhull replied on :

    @EBS

    This is but one of many enhancements we are planning. Please keep coming with the suggestions! We are really working to make this a great community.

    Thanks,
    Doug

  8. Oleg replied on :

    I’ll still be hanging around in the newsgroup, answers should be ‘integrated’ with it.

  9. dhull replied on :

    @Oleg,

    What would it mean for them to be integrated?

  10. Oleg replied on :

    @dhull
    I like the scoring system and interface of Answers but it shouldn’t be kept as a separate entity from the Newsgroup. What I’d like to see is the same interface and scoring system applied to the NG.
    I know that those who access CSSM directly won’t be able to contribute or benefit from it but nevertheless those who do access CSSM through the NG can have both the benefits of an advanced interface and the best response.

    Hi, I found some problems with the system

    1) When doing the “Comment on this Answer” we get a super small textbox, can you please increase it so we can view more lines?

    2) We should be able to edit the “Comment on this Answer”, I had to delete my comment and do it again because of a small mistake caused by problem 1) textbox too small

    3) Is there any problem if we edit our answer after being accepted? one of my answer had errors and I fixed it after being accepted, also add more code, is this permited?

  12. Paulo Silva replied on :

    4) After deleting a “Comment on this Answer” and starting another “Comment on this Answer” your system gave me an empty page with the micro (super small 1) ) “Comment on this Answer”
    and the save button, was this on purpose or some kind of bug?

  13. Sean de Wolski replied on :

    1) On Paulo’s 11.1-2, you also can’t include code snippets. Boo.

    2) In the Answers homepage it would be nice to see not only how many “answers” but also how many “comments.” E.g. 0 answers, 3 comments, 2 votes.

    3) It would be nice to see a “Your comments” section under our profiles. That way I can find threads I commented on but did not “answer” in the event that the OP posted a comment to my comment.

  14. Erik de Boer replied on :

    A mail notification for every answer/comment? Perhaps optional, like My Watchlist in the newsgroup.

  15. Jason replied on :

    Hi, is there a bug on MATLAB Answers? I tried posting a question and all I got was this message: The page you were looking for doesn’t exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved.

    I have been frequenting similar websites like, for example Yahoo Answers (primarily). I believe there must be feedbacks that I could offer. First of all, allow me to post questions first, lol!

  16. dhull replied on :

    @Jason,

    Must have been a temporary error during a server upgrade. Link is working.

Wrap code fragments inside <pre> tags, like this:

<pre class="code">
a = magic(3);
sum(a)
</pre>

If you have a "<" character in your code, either follow it with a space or replace it with "&lt;" (including the semicolon).
