{"id":401,"date":"2016-07-26T14:57:42","date_gmt":"2016-07-26T14:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/headlines\/?p=401"},"modified":"2025-10-17T10:24:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T14:24:43","slug":"nasa-used-this-camera-to-capture-the-martian-morse-code-seen-in-photo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/headlines\/2016\/07\/26\/nasa-used-this-camera-to-capture-the-martian-morse-code-seen-in-photo\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA used this camera to capture the Martian Morse code seen in photo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, <em>Fox News<\/em> reported, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stunning NASA image shows &#8216;Morse code&#8217; dunes on Mars<\/a>.\u201d New pictures from the surface of the red planet showed an uncharacteristic collection of dots and dashes reminiscent of Morse code markings in the sand, albeit at a relatively large scale.<\/p>\n<p>NASA shared the images of the Martian surface, taken earlier this year by a high-resolution camera called HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) as it orbited the red planet. <a href=\"http:\/\/hirise.lpl.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HiRISE<\/a> is one of the three cameras aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 466px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/esp_044675_2580.jpg\" alt=\"black and white image of diagonal strands and square dots.\" width=\"456\" height=\"285\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image credit: NASA\/JPL\/University of Arizona<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HiRISE is a\u00a0visible camera designed to reveal relatively small-scale objects in the debris blankets of mysterious gullies on Mars as well as details of geologic structures of canyons, craters, and layered deposits on the planet. The other cameras on the MRO were designed to provide wider views of the terrain and to monitor Mars\u2019 weather and multitude of dust storms.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 508px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mro\/images\/PIA07087-fi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mro\/images\/PIA07087-fi.jpg\" width=\"498\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">HiRISE is one of six science instruments for NASA&#8217;s MRO. No, they simply bear a striking resemblance to the dots and dashes <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morse_code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first used in 1836<\/a> as part of an electric telegraph system.<\/p>\n<p>As NASA explains, the dots and dashes seen on Mars are sand dunes created by the wind. The area in the photo is a circular depression, likely an old impact crater. The reason for the unique patterns is not completely understood\u00a0but is thought to be the result of the limited amount of sand at the location and the circular shape of the depression.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/spaceimages\/details.php?id=PIA20735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>, \u201cThe \u201cdashes\u201d are linear dunes formed by bi-directional winds, which are not traveling parallel to the dune. Instead, the combined effect of winds from two directions at right angles to the dunes, funnels material into a linear shape. The smaller \u201cdots\u201d (called \u201cbarchanoid dunes\u201d) occur where there is some interruption to the process forming those linear dunes. This process is not well understood at present and is one motivation for HiRISE to image this area.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If it were Morse code, the message wouldn&#8217;t make much sense in any Earthly language anyways. According to\u00a0NASA planetary scientist Veronica Bray, the message would read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #e89400;\">NEE NED ZB 6TNN DEIBEDH SIEFI EBEEE SSIEI ESEE SEEE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>HiRISE and MATLAB<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>HiRISE\u00a0is the largest telescope ever sent to another planet. It acquires images at 30 cm\/pixel scale.\u00a0Dr. Alfred McEwen is a professor at the University of Arizona, the principal investigator of images from the HiRISE camera on NASA\u2019s MRO. The <a href=\"http:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EPSC2012\/EPSC2012-481.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HiRISE team uses MATLAB<\/a>\u00a0in their image processing subsystem that\u00a0removes\u00a0distortions due to the optics and focal plane array to correct images for spacecraft jitter as necessary.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe used MATLAB for measurement and correction of pointing jitter, and for auto triangulation before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geospatialexploitationproducts.com\/content\/socet-set-v56\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Socet Set<\/a> stereo topographic processing.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 Dr. Alfred S. McEwen, director of the Planetary Image Research Lab at the University of Arizona\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lpl.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lunar and Planetary Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>HiRISE also utilizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/products\/matlab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MATLAB <\/a>to create the digital terrain model (DTM) from the imagery and LIDAR data. These DTM images are stunning color images, and can be seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uahirise.org\/dtm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Real<\/em> Morse code on Mars in 2012<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the first reported sighting of Morse code on Mars. But the earlier reports were <em>actual<\/em> Morse code. The Engineers at Nasa\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) had modified the tire treads on the NASA&#8217;s Curiosity rover to create the following pattern:<\/p>\n<h1><strong>. &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h1><strong>. &#8211; &#8211; .<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h1><strong>. &#8211; . .<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Of course, it spells out \u201c<span style=\"color: #e84d1a;\"><strong>J<\/strong><\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #e84d1a;\"><strong>P<\/strong><\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #e84d1a;\"><strong>L<\/strong><\/span>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Were they trying to hide an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_egg_(media)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Easter Egg<\/a>\u201d on the surface of Mars?
