Get out and let your smartphone park your car."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0number of high-profile stories about self-driving vehicles have been in the news lately, including Google\u2019s announcement of over\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Technology\/google-learned-17-million-miles-road\/story?id=30962113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.7 million self-driven<\/a>\u00a0miles,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-hires-auto-industry-manufacturing-veteran-1437430826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple\u2019s hiring of auto industry executives<\/a>, and Elon Musk&#8217;s forecast of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2015\/09\/29\/elon-musk-says-tesla-cars-will-reach-620-miles-on-a-single-charge-within-a-year-or-two-have-fully-autonomous-cars-in-three-years\/#.ukbyhy:Me0R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully-autonomous Tesla in three years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three years before the debut of commercially available cars means more like 10 for those of us who aren\u2019t likely to be the early adopters.<\/p>\n<p>While I like driving, I hate coming out to a parking lot to find my car trapped by a \u201cparking challenged\u201d driver. So when I saw the\u00a0<em><strong>Daimler&#8217;s new<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><em><strong><a title=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz.com\/en\/mercedes-benz\/innovation\/remote-parking-pilot\/ (link no longer works)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smartphone app<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0drives your car out of a tight parking spot for you<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>, <\/strong><\/em>I was immediately interested!<\/p>\n<p>The first car available with this feature, the Mercedes Benz\u00a02017 E-Class, was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dbusiness.com\/daily-news\/Annual-2016\/Mercedes-Benz-Unveils-New-E-Class-with-Added-Tech-Features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled <\/a>at the Detroit auto show\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n<p>Daimler, who previously shared how they use\u00a0MATLAB and Simulink for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/company\/user_stories\/daimler-designs-cruise-controller-for-mercedes-benz-trucks.html?s_tid=srchtitle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modeling and code generation<\/a>, previewed this &#8220;remote parking pilot&#8221; technology at the MathWorks Automotive Conference in Stuttgart, Germany in September, 2015. Here&#8217;s a video that shows how it works:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gh1dMPVns7s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many of today&#8217;s vehicles are enabled with are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), with features such as lane departure warnings and hands-free parallel parking. The current systems require a driver at the wheel. <!--introduction-->With the \u201c<a title=\"https:\/\/www.mercedes-benz.com\/en\/mercedes-benz\/innovation\/remote-parking-pilot\/ (link no longer works)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remote parking pilot<\/a>\u201d, the driver controls the car with\u00a0his or her smartphone via Bluetooth from outside of the vehicle.<!--\/introduction--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The vehicle can then be moved by control from outside. The parking scenario is enacted automatically &#8211; including steering, braking and gear direction changes &#8211; as long as the driver continues to provide a confirmation gesture on the smartphone. The driver monitors the process from outside the vehicle and still has complete responsibility for their vehicle during the entire parking process,\u00a0&#8221; from Daimler&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/media.daimler.com\/dcmedia\/0-921-1830124-1-1830512-1-0-1-1830554-0-1-12637-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0.html?TS=1455045826616 (link no longer works)\" target=\"_blank\">Global Media Site<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Eberhard Zeeb of Daimler, AG presented\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/videos\/implementing-autonomous-cars-108098.html?s_tid=srchtitle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Implementing Autonomous Cars<\/a>\u201d, in which he covered currently available ADAS and the fully-autonomous vehicles of the future.\u00a0There is quite a difference between being amazed about showcases and demos and being flabbergasted by the complexity of turning them into an actual product. In his talk, Dr. Zeeb focuses on what it takes to put autonomous driving into customer hands. Sensing, communication, and control systems are transforming vehicles.
