It seems I am not alone!  A simple search of 'arithmetic chattgpt' on BlueSky furnished me with many amusing examples showing how it can fail to <\/span><a href = \"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/gordonmcconnell.com\/post\/3lhrfrrfkuw2p\" target=\"_blank\"><span>add up a list of numbers<\/span><\/a><span>, <\/span><a href = \"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jack-bailey.co.uk\/post\/3lvtnq52tmk2t\" target=\"_blank\"><span>count the number of 'r's in 'blueberry'<\/span><\/a><span> and so on.<\/span><\/div><div  style = 'margin: 2px 10px 9px 4px; padding: 0px; line-height: 21px; min-height: 0px; white-space: pre-wrap; color: rgb(33, 33, 33); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-size: 14px; font-weight: 400; text-align: left; '><span>The fact that LLMs make mistakes like this is not surprising at all once you understand how they work. LLMs don't perform calculations, they predict patterns based on their training data. \"1+1=2\" will have appeared in the training data a lot. \"590675249 + 9579089\", not so much. If anything, I am surprised that LLMs work as well as they do on this sort of thing and they are getting better all the time! It has 'only' 12 billion parameters which means that I can run it on my aging desktop! These mistakes are often called <\/span><a href = \"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hallucination_(artificial_intelligence)\" target=\"_blank\"><span>hallucinations<\/span><\/a><span> and they seem to be a fundamental limitation of LLM based technology. Larger models can reduce how often they happen but <\/span><a href = \"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2401.11817\" target=\"_blank\"><span>hallucination is inevitable<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><div  style = 'margin: 2px 10px 9px 4px; padding: 0px; line-height: 21px; min-height: 0px; white-space: pre-wrap; color: rgb(33, 33, 33); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-size: 14px; font-weight: 400; text-align: left; '><span>Given issues like this, it can be tempting to dismiss LLM based artificial intelligence completely. It can get even very basic things wrong while presenting results confidently as fact. Well, so can I and MathWorks seems to think that, on balance, I'm useful enough to pay a salary. I am excited by the possibilities, use it all the time <\/span><span style=' font-weight: bold;'>but<\/span><span> keep in mind its weaknesses and limitations at all times.
