{"id":14352,"date":"2021-11-02T12:46:37","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T16:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/pick\/?p=14352"},"modified":"2021-11-02T12:46:37","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T16:46:37","slug":"electric-machines-and-power-virtual-labs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/pick\/2021\/11\/02\/electric-machines-and-power-virtual-labs\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Machines and Power Virtual Labs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/matlabcentral\/profile\/authors\/869871\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jiro<\/a>'s Pick this week is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/matlabcentral\/fileexchange\/97027\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electrical Engineering Virtual Electric Machine & Power Labs<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/matlabcentral\/profile\/authors\/6605474\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas Jusssaume<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it is to adapt to online\/hybrid teaching or to provide students with a lab environment where they can tinker with from the comfort of their own homes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/academia\/online-teaching\/virtual-labs.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">virtual labs<\/a> are becoming more common these days to help transition physical labs to something that can be done on a computer.<\/p>\n<p>Douglas has shared a series of virtual lab assignments he created for an Electric Power Systems course.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"423\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/pick\/files\/ee_vl_current_folder.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14370\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For each lab, he includes a lab manual with the objectives of the lab, description of the Simulink model, list of experimental and analytical tasks. The labs use Simscape to model the various power systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/help\/simulink\/slref\/knob.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knobs<\/a> let students vary parameters, and displays and scopes let students read off measurements.<\/p>\n<p>Here is one of the labs in action. Note that I'm running this using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/products\/matlab-online.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MATLAB Online<\/a>.
