{"id":42,"date":"2009-01-02T17:00:50","date_gmt":"2009-01-02T17:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/seth\/2009\/01\/02\/passion-for-simulink\/"},"modified":"2017-04-19T14:38:03","modified_gmt":"2017-04-19T19:38:03","slug":"passion-for-simulink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/simulink\/2009\/01\/02\/passion-for-simulink\/","title":{"rendered":"Passion for Simulink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy New Year!\u00a0 On New Year\u2019s Eve, it snowed for most of<br \/>\nthe day in Massachusetts.\u00a0 On New Year\u2019s Day, I went out to clear some snow<br \/>\nfrom my driveway.\u00a0 When I stopped for a rest this beautiful white canvas faced<br \/>\nme, and it reminded me of the Simulink canvas.\u00a0 I grabbed a stick and sketched<br \/>\nout a familiar model.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q1\/snow 004_adjusted_small.png\" alt=\"Block diagram in my front yard, drawn in the snow.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Snow drawings have horrible contrast, so I modified this<br \/>\nimage using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/help\/releases\/R2008b\/toolbox\/images\/imadjust.html\">IMADJUST<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Later in the day, I went sledding with my kids at a nearby<br \/>\nhill above some sports fields.\u00a0 Again, I saw a beautiful, pristine canvas.\u00a0 I<br \/>\ncouldn\u2019t resist the opportunity to express system dynamics on such a large<br \/>\nscale, so, again I paced out a Simulink model.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q1\/snow 007small_shadow.png\" alt=\"Simulink model in the snow, from January 1, 2009.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This image doesn\u2019t do justice to the block diagram represented<br \/>\nby my foot prints.\u00a0 I made a montage from a couple of my pictures and did some<br \/>\ncontrast correction with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/help\/releases\/R2008b\/toolbox\/images\/imadjust.html\">IMADJUST<\/a>.<br \/>\nHere is the result:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q1\/vdpsnowmontageadjusted_small.png\" alt=\"Simulink model in the snow, montage of images.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/help\/releases\/R2008b\/toolbox\/images\/imtransform.html\">IMTRANSFORM<\/a><br \/>\nto project the image so it would look like an aerial photograph.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q1\/vdpsnowtall_small_shadow.png\" alt=\"Simulink model in the snow, transformed iwth IMTRANSFORM\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Zooming using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/help\/releases\/R2008b\/toolbox\/images\/imcrop.html\">IMCROP<\/a><br \/>\nand resizing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/help\/releases\/R2008b\/toolbox\/images\/imresize.html\">IMRESIZE<\/a><br \/>\nproduces this final version of the snowfield block diagram.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q1\/vdpsnowprojected_small2_shadow.png\" alt=\"Simulink model in the snow, tranformed and cropped.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can tell, even when I\u2019m out playing in the snow with<br \/>\nmy kids, I might also be thinking about Simulink.\u00a0 Most engineers I know have a<br \/>\npassion for their work.\u00a0 People who love the tools they use to do their work<br \/>\nexpress their passion in interesting ways.\u00a0 For example, have you ever seen a<br \/>\ncar with the license plate \u201cMATLAB\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q1\/matlabcar_shadow.png\" alt=\"MATLAB License plate.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(I leave it to the reader to transform and crop this image<br \/>\ndown to just the license plate.)<\/p>\n<p>Here is another example; an engineering student at <a href=\"http:\/\/olin.edu\/\">Olin College<\/a> made a Simulink inspired pumpkin<br \/>\ncarving in celebration of Halloween.\u00a0 \u00a0I found out about this thanks to Colin Zwiebel\u2019s post on the Olin<br \/>\nstudent blog.
