{"id":55,"date":"2009-05-13T20:48:38","date_gmt":"2009-05-13T20:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/seth\/2009\/05\/13\/what-does-model-based-design-mean-to-you\/"},"modified":"2017-02-04T14:49:57","modified_gmt":"2017-02-04T19:49:57","slug":"what-does-model-based-design-mean-to-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/simulink\/2009\/05\/13\/what-does-model-based-design-mean-to-you\/","title":{"rendered":"What does Model-Based Design mean to you?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I stumbled upon a blog post over at <a href=\"http:\/\/greengarageblog.org\">The Green Garage<\/a> where they interviewed a couple of my colleagues, Paul Smith and Shaun Kalinowski.\u00a0 They talked to them in front of the MathWorks booth at the <a href=\"\">SAE World Congress<\/a> in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the interview is about answering the question \u201cHow do you make math cool again for students these days?\u201d\u00a0 MathWorks is an <a title=\"http:\/\/www.ecocarchallenge.org\/ (link no longer works)\">EcoCAR <\/a>sponsor, and Shaun is one of the mentors for an EcoCAR team. \u00a0I really like Paul\u2019s comparison of engineering simulation to playing video games while you are doing your work.<\/p>\n<p>About thirty seconds into the video Paul describes Model-Based Design as \u201ca technique used by engineers to design the next generation of systems that go into cars, airplanes and cell phones.\u201d\u00a0 I have had many conversations with people who say they are doing Model-Based Design.\u00a0 Are they all using the same technique?\u00a0 How do you define and document what that technique is?<\/p>\n<p>I think this line of questioning leads to an interesting observation.\u00a0 Model-Based Design means different things to different people, and there is no one right way to do it. The MathWorks website has some great user stories about applying Model-Based Design techniques.\u00a0 These storied include companies like Boeing, Astrium, Bell Helicopter, BAE Systems, Toyota, and Xerox.
