{"id":68,"date":"2009-10-06T03:00:21","date_gmt":"2009-10-06T03:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/seth\/2009\/10\/06\/mathworks-hosts-eco-car\/"},"modified":"2016-12-30T14:43:12","modified_gmt":"2016-12-30T19:43:12","slug":"mathworks-hosts-eco-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/simulink\/2009\/10\/06\/mathworks-hosts-eco-car\/","title":{"rendered":"MathWorks Hosts EcoCAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, when I arrived at work, I found this parked on the\r\nlawn:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q4\/EcoCar_onLawnSmall.jpg\" alt=\"EcoCAR Chalenge Year 2 Fall Workshop at The MathWorks\"><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>This is the EcoCAR from the <a\r\ntitle=\"http:\/\/www.ecocarchallenge.org\/ (link no longer works)\">EcoCAR Challenge<\/a>. MathWorks hosted\r\nabout one hundred students from the EcoCAR teams for the EcoCAR Year 2 Fall\r\nWorkshop.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>A Big Shiny Embedded Target<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>When I first saw the EcoCAR sitting on the lawn, I wondered\r\nwhat system target file they might use:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/images\/seth\/2009Q4\/EcoCarTLC_small.png\" alt=\"An imaginary EcoCAR System TLC file.\"><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>I\u2019m sure there are a lot of cool things these students will\r\nbe able to do with a great piece of hardware like this, but in many ways, it\u2019s\r\njust a big, shinny embedded target.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>What is EcoCAR?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>EcoCAR is an academic competition.\u00a0 A quote from <a\r\nhref=\"\">ecocarchallenge.org<\/a>\r\nsums it up:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><quote>\u201cThe competition challenges 17 universities across North\r\n        America to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles by minimizing the\r\n        vehicle\u2019s fuel consumption and reducing its emissions while retaining the\r\n        vehicle\u2019s performance, safety and consumer appeal. Students use a real-world\r\n        engineering process to design and integrate their advanced technology solutions\r\ninto a 2009 Saturn Vue.\u201d<\/quote><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The students had 5 days of training in different tracks to\r\nlearn and apply MathWorks tools to the design problems facing them.\u00a0 If you\r\nread the <a href=\"http:\/\/greengarageblog.org\/\">Green Car Garage blog<\/a>, you\r\nmay have read about the\r\nevent and the\r\nfun teams had during their visit to Boston. Nicole Lambiase from <a\r\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.anl.gov\/\">Argon National Lab<\/a> wrote a post\r\ncommenting that it really takes a village to make these competition events\r\nrun smoothly. \u00a0Some of the people in that village are members of the\r\nModel-Based Design community.\u00a0 A lot of my colleagues volunteer with EcoCAR\r\nChallenge.\u00a0 Many of them traveled from our Michigan office to lead trainings\r\nand mentor students that attended.\u00a0 <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>The Trouble with Model-Based Design<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The trouble with Model-Based Design is that there are very\r\nfew people and institutions available to help you learn it.\u00a0 I never had a\r\nclass on Model-Based Design when I went to school.\u00a0 The EcoCAR Challenge is an opportunity\r\nto develop the next generation of engineers skilled in Model-Based Design.\u00a0 MathWorks\r\nis very committed to mentoring these future engineers.\u00a0 This aligns with our academic\r\nmission to accelerate the pace of learning, discovery, and research in\r\nengineering and science.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>How about you?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>How did you learn about modeling and Model-Based Design?\u00a0 Who\r\nwas your mentor?
