Startup Shorts – WaveSense Enables Self-Driving Vehicles to Navigate in Challenging Road Conditions

Autonomous car technology has made enormous advances within the past decade, yet as far as the technology has come, these developments are not without their challenges when inclement weather comes into play. Fog, snow, and ice can reduce visibility making the road and ground markings hard to see, something WaveSense, a startup based in Greater Boston, is working to overcome.

In this feature video, WaveSense CTO, Byron Stanley, describes how the team is using radar technology with MATLAB to create a subterranean map, enabling vehicles to be located with centimeter-level accuracy. These vehicles are given a new way to “see”, even when the road isn’t visible to the human eye.
