In this post, I want to talk about what we saw at the event, why we attended, and why it was such a great time.<\/p>\n<h1>Introduction to World Robot Summit<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/worldrobotsummit.org\">World Robot Summit (WRS)<\/a> is a new robotics event operating under the motto <strong>&#8220;Robotics for Happiness&#8221;<\/strong>. This refers to the future of robotics in our society &#8212; in particular, how robots can coexist with humans for the greater good. This is an important cause: to communicate the existing and potential scientific contributions of robotics with the goal of improving public perception of such a disruptive technology.<\/p>\n<p>WRS 2018 in Tokyo was the &#8220;warm-up&#8221; in preparation for the main WRS 2020 event that will be held in Nagoya. As you may know, 2020 is the year that Japan will be hosting the Summer Olympic Games. If you weren&#8217;t already planning to visit Japan, maybe the robots will get you there!<\/p>\n<p>WRS is divided into two events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>World Robot Expo (WRE)<\/strong> &#8212; Exhibitions and presentations from companies, researchers, and government organizations involved in robotics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>World Robot Challenge (WRC)<\/strong> &#8212; A set of robotics challenges featuring students and companies from all around the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What I found most interesting is that several companies were involved in sponsoring these challenges, which provided the competing teams with cutting-edge robot hardware.<\/p>\n<p>The WRC categories spanned a wide range of real-world robotics applications. Here is an annotated photo of an interactive wall I spotted at the event.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2246 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_2018_Wall-1024x622.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Below is a brief overview of the WRC categories, each with a link to their introduction video.<\/p>\n<h2>Industrial Robotics<\/h2>\n<p>This category featured the <strong>Assembly Challenge<\/strong>. Each team operated in a work cell containing large industrial robot arms. Teams had either 2 or 3 manipulators, and many brands were represented, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fanuc.com\/product\/robot.html\">FANUC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/robotics.kawasaki.com\/en1\/index.html\">Kawasaki<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mitsubishielectric.com\/fa\/products\/rbt\/robot\/\">Mitsubishi<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universal-robots.com\/\">Universal Robots<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/global.yamaha-motor.com\/business\/robot\">Yamaha<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motoman.com\/\">Yaskawa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The robots collaboratively performed dexterous manipulation tasks. This involved picking small parts such as screws, nuts, and other fasteners, and precisely placing them into task boards, kits, or assemblies. These challenge runs were impressive to watch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-jkki8kHNuc&amp;t=3s\">Industrial Robotics Category introduction video<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1200px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2102-1\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1000\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_Assembly_Video.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_Assembly_Video.mp4\">https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_Assembly_Video.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div><\/p>\n<h2>Service Robotics<\/h2>\n<p>This category consisted of two challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Partner Robot Challenge:\u00a0<\/strong>Based on home robots, and exclusively used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota-global.com\/innovation\/partner_robot\/robot\/\">Toyota Human Support Robot (HSR)<\/a>. Participants could either use a real robot or a virtual reality (VR) capable simulator called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigverse.org\">SIGVerse<\/a>. Tasks included tidying up rooms, locating and bringing objects, and interacting with humans in the home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future Convenience Store Challenge (FCSC): <\/strong>Sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.7andi.com\/en\/\">Seven &amp; i Holdings<\/a>, known in part for the 7-Eleven convenience store chain. Here, participants could bring their own robots (some were custom built, some were standard platforms) and demonstrate capabilities in customer interaction, shelf stocking, and toilet cleaning. Yes, toilet cleaning. Do yourself a favor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vx3QdaPD8bw\">find some videos online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ktcfNfTYiVo\">Service Robotics Category introduction video<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2254 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/Partner_Robot-e1542391338399.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"861\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Disaster Robotics<\/h2>\n<p>This category consisted of three challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plant Disaster Recovery Challenge:<\/strong> Motivated by real events such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fukushima_Daiichi_nuclear_disaster\">Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011<\/a>, this challenge requires robots to prevent and respond to disasters in a nuclear plant-like environment. Participants used wheeled ground robots, snake-like ground robots, quadrotors, and more to perform various tasks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tunnel Disaster Response and Recovery Challenge:<\/strong>\u00a0A simulation challenge in which participants controlled a team of robots, each with different capabilities, to collaborate in a tunnel collapse scenario. Some tasks included navigating obstacles, searching for victims trapped in vehicles, and extinguishing fires.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standard Disaster Robotics Challenge:<\/strong> Teams brought their rescue robots to a test field and evaluated them on various performance metrics, such as dexterity, mobility, and sensing. This is largely based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/el\/intelligent-systems-division-73500\/response-robots\">National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Test Methods for Response Robots<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What I found most interesting in this category was the role of <strong>teleoperation<\/strong>. For all three challenges, participants were placed in a hidden area where they could only perceive the environment through the sensors of the robot. Therefore, operator proficiency and sensor selection\/placement played a big role in this category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iSnKMC0-CNI\">Disaster Robotics Category introduction video<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1000px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2102-2\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_2018_Disaster_Video.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_2018_Disaster_Video.mp4\">https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/racing-lounge\/files\/2018\/11\/WRS_2018_Disaster_Video.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div><\/p>\n<h2>Junior Robotics<\/h2>\n<p>Last, but not least, was the educational category for participants 19 years old or younger. This consisted of two challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>School Robot Challenge:<\/strong> Programming human-robot interaction in a school setting, using the popular social robot\u00a0<a href=\"\">SoftBank Pepper<\/a> as the standard hardware.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Home Robot Challenge:<\/strong> Participants built their own robots (we saw hardware such as LEGO, VEX, and Arduino) to perform basic navigation, object detection and manipulation, and human-robot interaction tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Besides the standard challenges, the participants were assigned with an open demonstration and technical presentation.
