These projects help you learn about technology trends while becoming an important and valued contributor to the advancement of technical computing and Model-Based Design with MATLAB and Simulink. Even more, you can gain official recognition for your problem-solving skills from technology leaders at MathWorks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Motivation<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every year,\u00a0instructors from\u00a0college and\u00a0universities\u00a0all around the world\u00a0need to\u00a0produce numerous project ideas\u00a0with industry relevance\u00a0for\u00a0their\u00a0senior design class\u00a0students.\u00a0This is\u00a0arduous\u00a0yet\u00a0important work as\u00a0the choice of a project impacts\u00a0the future of\u00a0each\u00a0student\u2019s\u00a0professional career.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The MathWorks Excellence in Innovation program not only provides\u00a0a source of industry relevant projects\u00a0that\u00a0are based on engineering\u00a0megatrends but\u00a0incentivizes students by\u00a0offering rewards\u00a0for\u00a0submitting satisfying\u00a0solutions.\u00a0Moreover, the\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mathworks\/MathWorks-Excellence-in-Innovation\/discussions\/23\">discussion board<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>serves\u00a0as a forum to\u00a0collaborate virtually among students working on the same project,\u00a0even if\u00a0in\u00a0different areas\u00a0of the world,\u00a0and\u00a0interact with MathWorks engineers\u00a0to ask questions and\u00a0request\u00a0clarifications.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pilot project with the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u00a0have recently finished\u00a0a\u00a0pilot\u00a0project initiated\u00a0in October 2020\u00a0with Professor Shayne McConomy\u00a0(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Figure\u00a01<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0from\u00a0the Mechanical Engineering Department\u00a0of the\u00a0Florida\u00a0Agricultural and Mechanical University \u2013 Florida State University (FAMU-FSU)\u00a0College of Engineering.\u00a0Professor McConomy\u00a0welcomed the idea of using projects from\u00a0our list and his\u00a0enthusiastic\u00a0feedback about\u00a0the importance and usefulness of this program, particularly mentioning the contribution to experiential learning\u00a0in conjunction\u00a0with capstone\/senior design classes,\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0a very encouraging and\u00a0a\u00a0motivating stimulus\u00a0to\u00a0advance and scale up the program.\u00a0Below\u00a0Professor\u00a0McConomy\u2019s\u00a0quote on the program\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6009\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.mathworks.com\/student-lounge\/files\/2021\/08\/McConomy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"215\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Figure 1: Professor Shayne McConomy<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe MathWorks Excellence in Innovation program gives students a grand challenge to address, and the GitHub repository affords the students a foundation to explore solutions to the grand challenge. It has been shown that learning improves when students are able to work on grand challenges with experiential learning. Here\u00a0is how it worked and what they were able to achieve.\u00a0The team,\u00a0composed of four\u00a0senior students:\u00a0Austin\u00a0LaFever,\u00a0Patrick\u00a0H.\u00a0Marlatt,\u00a0Frederick Peterson,\u00a0and\u00a0Jonathan Wozny,\u00a0(pictures of the students in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Figure 2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0worked\u00a0on\u00a0an automotive project,\u00a0named\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mathworks\/MathWorks-Excellence-in-Innovation\/tree\/main\/projects\/MIMO%20Engine%20Airpath%20Control\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>MIMO Engine Airpath Control<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0objective to design and implement a\u00a0torque control\u00a0that\u00a0improves\u00a0a\u00a0car\u2019s engine performance using a\u00a0Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO)\u00a0approach.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259,&quot;469777462&quot;:[9720],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The challenging project\u00a0gave the students the opportunity to gain knowledge of\u00a0a\u00a0car\u2019s powertrain system,\u00a0modeling and simulation, system identification,\u00a0and\u00a0an\u00a0advanced control\u00a0approach\u00a0such as\u00a0the increasingly popular\u00a0model predictive control.\u00a0Moreover, throughout the project they had the\u00a0chance\u00a0to\u00a0apply\u00a0industry relevant tools for real\u00a0world\u00a0applications\u00a0building the\u00a0foundation\u00a0of their career in the automotive industry!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A quote from the students:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe were intrigued to expand our knowledge of MathWorks tools and learn practical applications of coding software.
