At MathWorks, we are proud to partner with Formula Student UK to support the next generation of engineers. I personally have been attending this event for 10 years and I’m always excited to go to the final event and see the amazing cars the teams have created. Supporting this competition allows us to provide aspiring engineers with the resources, mentorship, and real-world experience they need to excel in their careers.
Several of our commercial partners also support Formula Student UK and this summer we combined forces to bring you some presentations that show how MATLAB and Simulink are used by engineers in the automotive industry.
One of those partners was Mercedes AMG HPP and Harry Dagnall joined us in our booth to share his journey and the critical role MATLAB played in his career development.
Harry participated in Formula Student UK as a member of SUFST (Southampton University). He was head of Powertrain and helped the team to finish their first ever endurance race. During the summer of 2019 Harry was offered a placement at Mercedes AMG HPP. Throughout his presentation, Harry emphasized that at Mercedes AMG HPP, MATLAB is integral to data analysis, simulation, and testing processes. Even during his placement, he used MATLAB to create pre-event reports and run simulations for the Formula E performance engineering team.
“We’d use MATLAB to create these sensitivities and these understandings for the power unit engineers that are going to the track at the weekend to go and give them everything they needed in their back pocket. You never know when you’re turning up to a circuit what the grip is going to be like, what the weather is going to be like, and these can all affect how they need to set the car up and the calibration. And that was a really interesting introduction to professional world of MATLAB for me.”
Learning MATLAB as a student helped Harry develop essential technical skills such as data analysis, algorithm development, and modeling. His role at Mercedes AMG HPP involved analyzing vast amounts of data from engine tests, which required proficiency in MATLAB to process and interpret the results effectively. This skill set is highly valued by employers who seek candidates capable of handling complex technical challenges. Having these skills along with his experience led to a full-time position at Mercedes AMH HPP as a durability strategy engineer.
“So there’s not really this concept anymore, at least at HPP of being a data analysis engineer solely or being a coder or being someone who can use MATLAB. It’s a tool that everyone has, really needs to have in their back pocket and to use at any moment.”
Learning MATLAB is not just about acquiring a new software skill; it’s about building a foundation for a successful engineering career. As Harry’s experience illustrates, MATLAB proficiency can lead to exciting job opportunities, professional growth, and a significant advantage in the job market.
