MathWorks Call for Research Proposals Spring 2025

Do you conduct research on 'Engineered Systems'?

If you are in the business of building or conducting research on 'Engineered Systems' there's a good chance that you are a user of MathWorks' tools. At MathWorks we talk about 'Engineered Systems' all the time but I don't think I've ever seen an explicit definition. We all act like everyone knows what we mean.
So, I asked ChatGPT 'How would you define an engineered system?'
"An engineered system is a complex assembly of interacting components, designed and developed to achieve a specific purpose or function, often in response to real-world challenges. These systems integrate hardware, software, processes, and human interactions to operate efficiently, safely, and reliably"
That sounds about right to me. What do you think? Many at MathWorks would answer the question by giving a list of examples:
  • Aerospace and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
  • Automotive and Electric Vehicles (EVs)
  • Wireless Communication and Radar Systems
  • Energy Production Systems
  • Industrial Automation and Machinery
  • Robotics and Autonomous Systems
  • Medical Devices
There are many more of course and if I have missed your particular favorite type of engineered system, do drop me a comment to let me know what you are doing.
Anyway, if research into engineered systems is what you do then maybe you'd be interested in what's coming next.

MathWorks Call for Research Proposals is now open

MathWorks has just launched a program for funding research proposals and this first round is explicitly focused on engineered systems. Here are some of the details
  • Applicants must be current full-time faculty at an accredited academic institution that awards research degrees to Ph.D. students.
  • Each proposed project is expected to have identified a commercial partner who is willing to collaborate on the proposed project.
  • Each awarded project will get a maximum of USD 20,000 for a 1-year project as unrestricted gifts.
Important dates
  • Submission Period: March 3–May 30, 2025 (Proposals are due by May 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EDT)
  • Awards Panel Review: June 2025
  • Award Recipients Announced: July 2025
