Women in Tech at MathWorks
This post was assembled by Anoush Najarian. Anoush works at MathWorks as a performance engineer. Her job is to make MATLAB go fast. Among her many other interests (robotics, maker culture, Internet of Things, educational software, just to name a few) she likes to tell the stories of the many fascinating and talented women engineers and scientists who build and use MathWorks products.
MathWorks team arrives at GHC18, Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing
#shelovesmatlab is born
One day last March, we saw this tweet by Clea Zolotow, IBM Distinguished Engineer and Master Inventor:
We felt so proud we posted Clea’s tweet on Yammer powering our internal social network at MathWorks. Colleagues quickly jumped in, finding more awesome tweets by badass women who work with MATLAB. Together we brainstormed a way to celebrate the International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month.
That’s how we started #shelovesmatlab: a hashtag to celebrate women who work with MATLAB code: to understand how the brain works, fight climate change, build spaceships… Check out some of those early tweets here. One even made it onto this unique mug.
At MathWorks, we work with amazing women role models of our own! Our first #shelovesmatlab tweet was about a talk announcing new Big Data features in MATLAB at Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. Read about that trip, and about coming back to GHC18 with a larger team here.
Yay to every one of you who’s helping with #shelovesmatlab on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn! You rock!
Stickers
We wanted to show our #shelovesmatlab pride in real life, so we printed lots and lots of homemade laptop stickers, on shipping labels our Office Services friends let us have.
Colleagues in Cambridge, UK and Tokyo, Japan made some of their own. We’d love to have a picture of yours if you have one. Do you? We heard about them flying out of our colleagues’ hands at conferences like Supercomputing, SC18! If you want one, let us know in the comments. Professionally-made #shelovesmatlab stickers have recently been carefully crafted. We’re eager to share them!
Posters
To help everyone see the work by women in engineering and science we’ve been learning about with #shelovesmatlab, we designed posters and hung them on our office walls and in the hallways. Some of them traveled far, far away…like these posters Becky Margetts took back to her office at the University of Lincoln in the UK after her fantastic talk at the Women in Tech Ignite Breakfast at the MathWorks Research Summit!
We assembled some of these posters into a homemade Women in Tech at MathWorks 2019 Calendar here. You’re welcome to print your own!

Brownbags
We hosted #shelovesmatlab brownbags in Natick, MA, and in Bangalore and Hyderabad, India where we learned about how social media can build communities and give us superpowers.
Yay for this iconic tweet from the GHC18 opening ceremony!
Women’s t-shirts
We’re so happy to see MathWorks make women’s t-shirts for GHC18, Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, — and now the official MathWorks t-shirt is available in women’s sizes, with a #shelovesmatlab hashtag on the sleeve! Many people worked on this. Thank you all!
Do you have one of these t-shirts? Let us know in the comments! We’d love to see a photo!
Video
MathWorks Creative Services magicians made this video for GHC18, Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. Yay team!
