How the Airbus Sloshing Rocket Workshop Can Help Launch Your Aerospace Career

Today we’re talking to Harshul Jolly from Airbus Operations Ltd about the Airbus Sloshing Rocket Workshop. This isn’t just a competition; it’s a chance to solve real-world engineering puzzles, design rockets, and get noticed by industry leaders. Learn how ASRW could help launch career into aerospace. Harshul, over to you!

Tell us about the student competition?

What’s the problem students need to try and solve?

The Airbus Sloshing Rocket Workshop (ASRW) is a competition in which teams of university students are required to design a low-cost reusable rocket which is destabilised by the movement of water stored in an unpressurised tank.

What are the unique challenges and rewards for students participating the competition?

Students are expected to mitigate against the dynamic forces introduced by the sloshing water by implementing passive or active control mechanisms in order to maximise its range, time of flight and liquid payload capacity.

What kind of skills will students learn taking part in the competition?

What career opportunities can this skill set open for students in the aerospace industry?

Designing a flight vehicle is a multidisciplinary task encouraging students to explore design aspects ranging from adequate selection of wing configuration, materials, propulsion system and sloshing control mechanisms all while trying to balance these variables to achieve the mission requirements of range, time of flight and low cost. The challenge aims to simulate the conditions experienced by real world aerospace vehicles containing liquid propellant such as satellites or next generation aircrafts such as hypersonic vehicles. In taking part in the competition as well as attending the speaker sessions, the students are given insight into how aerospace vehicles are designed in industry to meet conflicting requirements.

Why is proficiency in tools like MATLAB & Simulink helpful for students involved in the competition?

The large number of specialised toolboxes and ability to interface with other programs makes MATLAB a very powerful tool amongst engineers working in a plethora of fields from the aerospace industry to the electrical engineering industry. Toolboxes such as the Requirements Toolbox and the MATLAB Optimisation Toolbox for instance can be used to easily manage the requirements and find optimal design solutions for a multidisciplinary problem such as the one the students are trying to solve with the ASRW.

Why did Airbus get involved in the competition?

What inspired Airbus to get involved with student competitions, and what are the expected outcomes and what is the benefit from engaging with the academic community through competitions?

At Airbus, we need people with the aspiration, enthusiasm and the talent to help us move forward and deliver our vision to pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world. By getting involved with student competitions, we can help students to effectively apply the theoretical knowledge learned in an engineering degree into an industrial setting.

Key Takeaways

What advice would you give young engineer?

Engineering can be challenging, but being resilient and persevering is key to overcoming obstacles and achieving your goals. Stay focused, motivated and don’t be afraid to ask questions or for help when needed.
Applications for the 2024/2025 ASRW are expected to be open in January 2025. More information and updates for the competition, including how to sign up, will be announced on the ASRW website: https://sloshing.euroavia.eu/
