As we get closer to the release of MATLAB R2024b this Wednesday, many users inevitably ask "What's the difference between the A and B releases of MATLAB?". It's a popular question on MATLAB Answers, for example, where some user's beliefs are rather eye-raising! I've also had some 'interesting' comments raised in private conversations. Some people think that the 'a' releases are more stable while others believe that the 'a' release introduce new features that are then finished in the 'b' releases. There's even a story where a major user of MATLAB said that they only deploy 'a' releases in their organization because 'a' is clearly a better grade than 'b'. So, I'm here to clarify the situation and tell you the official difference between the 'a' and 'b' releases of MATLAB. Are you ready?
- The 'a' releases are released early in the calendar year, usually in March.
- The 'b' releases are released later in the calendar year, usually in September
That's it! Here at MathWorks, we develop our products continuously, release every six months and both releases are considered equal.
I hope that clears things up!
