Data cursors are newly supported in MATLAB, and they work great. However you can always practice continuous improvement by going to the next level. That is what Phil Goddard did with his custom datacursormode. I really like how well documented this code is, it comes with a good example also.
As a side note, Phil is a former MathWorker and was the first person I met at the MathWorks when I went through my interview four years ago. I will never forget when I was sitting in the lobby waiting for him, he was biking into work two people when saw him coming so they held the doors open for him and he coasted through the lobby on his bike, then brought it up to his office. I knew this was a very cool company when I saw that.
